ABOUT THE MURIE CENTER

The Murie legacy is our foundation—that true and lasting conservation requires creativity and vigorous, informed dialogue across a full spectrum of interested people. During the past few decades the environmental movement has often been relegated to the position of special interest. Today, with the heightened awareness of climate change and sustainability, Conservation is once again emerging as a central theme in dialogues taking place in corporate board rooms, in the halls of government, and at kitchen tables.

Our work at the Murie Center is to demonstrate that conserving wilderness is not just a 'special interest'. Why? Because wilderness helps us keep perspective on our true place in the world. It is part of our foundation as humans for what is real, natural, and balanced. Without it, our understanding of healthy communities is lost and our human instincts are dulled. In wildness we are reminded of our human origins and our ethical obligation to pass life to future generations. We believe that this was the work of the Muries, and is what they would be doing today.

To be more effective at our work, we have crafted a new mission statement:

The Murie Center brings people together to develop and implement innovative strategies for conserving wild places and wildlife.

This year, we're working to accomplish our mission by focusing in five areas.

Innovation: Our Next Generation Project brings together young leaders currently working in the conservation movement. We are interested in creating non-traditional supporters of wild places and wildlife by expanding the importance of conservation in the lives of modern people.

Preservation: Our on-going efforts to restore the Murie Ranch as a vibrant gathering place for the conservation community now focus on the heart of the ranch: the Murie home. The home's rich history as a wellspring of innovation, education and leadership in the conservation community continues under the stewardship of the Murie Center.

Leadership: We're bringing together representatives of city and county government, business owners and concerned citizens to establish benchmarks, timeframes and methods to reduce local greenhouse gas emissions, while looking for ways to make Wyoming a leader in new clean energy technologies.

Education: Our internships and mentoring program help young people draw on their experiences at the Murie Center to help them make informed choices and develop conservation ethics that they will carry with them throughout their lives.

Community: We coordinate and fund the Teton Sustainability Project, which produces Eco-Fair each spring and promotes economically, environmentally and socially responsible community living throughout the year.

With your help, we'll continue to explore and promote conservation—not as an optional 'special interest' issue, but as a core American value which is integral to who we are and everything we do.
